Richard Feynman epitomized a new type of modern theoretical physicist to whom the common man could relate. A maverick with a charismatic personality and a love for adventure, Feynman began his professional career devising a mathematical formula that predicted the energy yield of an atomic explosion for the Manhattan Project. He went on to explain the concept of superfluidity, a critical point where gas and liquid behave the same way, as it pertained to helium. His seminal work occurred during his tenure at the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) in the early 1950s with his novel approach to quantum electrodynamics (QED), an area of physics that combines theories of quantum mechanics and electromagnetic radiation in a single theory of matter and light. After years of inadequate means of visualizing the events occurring at the subatomic level, Feynman developed diagrams, now called Feynman diagrams, that provide a visual way to follow interactions among various subatomic particles in both space and time. During this time, other physicists, namely, Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, used traditional mathematical approaches based on previous work to develop a valid theory of QED, but Feynman chose to reinvent quantum mechanics from the ground up and ultimately arrived at the same conclusion. In 1965 he shared the Nobel Prize in physics with Schwinger and Tomonaga for their collective contributions to QED theory.
Born May 11, 1918, to Melville and Lucille Feynman, Richard Feynman grew up in Far Rockaway, New York, a seaside suburb of New York City. Melville Feynman always encouraged his son to identify not what he knew but what he did not know. His father also believed that the best way to seek knowledge was through a well-asked question. Along with his mother's sense of humor, Richard took his father’s sage pieces of advice to heart, and the combination served him well throughout his life. By the time he was 10 years old, Richard busied himself assembling and disassembling crystal radio sets, and he often used his younger sister, Joan, as the hapless laboratory assistant in his hair-raising bedroom laboratory experiments. With a natural propensity toward anything to do with mathematics or science, Feynman taught himself differential and integral calculus by the time he was 15. Before entering college, he frequently experimented with esoteric mathematical concepts like half-integrals. Feynman enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1939. Feynman chose Princeton University to seek a doctoral degree in physics under John Wheeler. His doctoral thesis was theoretical in nature--dealing with a part of the theory of electromagnetic radiation concerning waves that travel backward in time. Feynman's approach to this problem in quantum mechanics laid the groundwork for his quantum electrodynamic theory and the Feynman diagrams. Icons in the field, Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Pauli, and John von Neumann, thought enough of Feynman's work that they attended the seminar when he defended it to obtain his doctorate in 1942. . .
