American Ballet Theatre is a Ballet company founded by Richard Pleasant in New York City in 1939 with a core group of dancers and a repertory primarily from the Russian dance companies. Pleasant managed the company with dancer and heiress Lucia Chase until resigning in 1941, whereupon his place was taken by designer Oliver Smith. Smith and Chase were succeeded by Mikhail Baryshnikov (1980-89). Jane Herman took over the management in 1989.
From the start, ABT was envisioned as an eclectic repository for the best dances of the Russian, English, Spanish, American and popular heritages and as a venue for star dancers (Natalia Makarova, Fernando Bujones) from all corners of the world. Though not marked by one choreographer's imprimatur, the company's general tenor and broad-based appeal were established by choreographers Antony Tudor (Pillar of Fire) and Jerome Robbins (Fancy Free) during the 1940s. Today the company performs works from the classical and romantic ballet tradition by such choreographers as Agnes de Mille, Kenneth Macmillan and George Balanchine, as well as dances in the modern and postmodern vein by Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Mark Morris and others. . .
