P.G. Wodehouse, creator of airy fantasies in which sublimely ridiculous characters engage in lunatic farce, is the great connoisseur of the ludicrous. There are around a hundred of his novels to choose from, all written in the distinctive Wodehousian manner. Psmith in the City is one of his earliest, the first in a four-novel sequence featuring two characters, Mike and Psmith.

Mike is in the tradition of English schoolboy heroes, sporty, decent and inarticulate, and the improbably, even monstrously, debonair Psmith is his friend and protector. When his father's financial ruin compels Mike to pass up the chance to spend three years playing cricket at the 'varsity and join the New Asiatic Bank instead, he finds to his surprise that Psmith is his companion in the Postage Department, having insouciantly succumbed to his own father's whim. "'Commerce,' said Psmith, as he drew off his lavender gloves, 'has claimed me for her own.'" In the adventures which follow, Psmith is revealed to be not only a wonderful entertainer (he likes to pass himself off as a taciturn Socialist), but a schemer of deadly effectiveness.

The fictional world of Psmith in the City is institutional, a male world of school, bank, gentleman's club and the MCC, institutions which are either mocked or revered, and sometimes both at once. It is hard, in fact, to pinpoint the Wodehousian attitude. The wild farce of individual scenes and his surreal prose style, at once slangy and ostentatious, create a sort of narrative delirium utterly at odds with his neatly constructed plots. But in a sense we are not dealing with the real world. Although, with their schoolboy stories and eccentric characters, the Englishness of Wodehouse's novels is not in doubt, what he essentially created was not so much an outdated late-Edwardian England as a fluent fantasy all his own.
