After many years of development in the 1960s and 70s, the internet first gained prominence in the late 1980s with the original Internet Service Providers (ISPs), which offered expensive access to limited network servers, mainly used by large corporations to relay large quantities of numerical information pertaining to research, business practices, and the early predecessors of electronic mail. The World Wide Web, as we know it today as a collection of html documents viewed through a web browser, was ushered in the early 1990s by English physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who will go down in history as the father of the World Wide Web we use, know, and love today.
By 1992, Berners-Lee had launched the early web, building a string of web nodes containing domain names, html documents, and hypertext pages on a network easily accessed by a web browser. The existing internet servers throughout the world were used to connect these pages together, and thus, the web was born. Berners-Lee has played an active part in the development of the web, gauging standards for html language and the development of the domain name/URL system that allows web browsing to be easily accessed by the public today. It is important to discern the difference, however, between the internet (a collection of servers, computers, and hard-wiring that provide the data exchange medium) and the Web (a huge set of documents, images, and other resources linked by an abstract web of hypertext links and URLs).
By the late 1990s, the internet/web had taken off and much capital was being invested into its development, thus creating the booming American economy and tech bubble that ultimately burst with the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The NASDAQ stock composite, a tech-heavy stock exchange, had reached its all-time high of 5132.34 in March 2000. Many new improvements of the internet had reached the public by this time. In 2001, Research in Motion partnered with cell phone manufacturer Blackberry to launch the first mobile-phone based web browser, offering limited access to modified web pages to be viewed on the hand-held devices.
Today, the internet is still in its infantile stages, and a debate rages: what is the next step for the internet in terms of regulation/taxation, governance by international bodies, and finally, the next nodes of the internet (WWW2). . .
