ACT 1 Valentine and Proteus are best friends, albeit with contrasting views of the world - Valentine is anxious to leave Verona, while Proteus is content to remain at home with his beloved Julia (much to Valentine's disgust). Though Proteus loves Julia, she, so far, has shown little interest in him, and when her maid-servant Lucetta gives her a letter from him, she flies into a rage and tears it up. Just as things start to go right for Proteus - he has finally received a response from Julia - his father Antonio decides to send him to join Valentine at the Milanese court.

ACT 2 In Milan, meanwhile, Valentine has fallen for Silvia - much to his servant Speed's amusement - despite the fact that her father, the Duke, favours the dim-witted but rich Thurio. Silvia, in turn, loves Valentine, but will not say so; instead she persuades him to write a love letter supposedly for another suitor but actually intended for himself. Back in Verona, Julia and Proteus vow eternal fidelity and exchange rings, while Proteus's servant Lance parts sadly from his family. Arriving in Milan, Proteus is reunited with Valentine and meets Silvia; Valentine then discloses how he plans to elope with her and enlists Proteus's help. But Proteus is so struck by Silvia that he resolves to woo her himself. Meanwhile Julia is missing her lover and decides to follow him disguised as a page - despite Lucetta's misgivings.

ACT 3 Proteus reveals his friend's plan to the Duke, who banishes Valentine upon pain of death. The Duke then asks Proteus to help Thurio find favour in Silvia's eyes by slandering Valentine and praising Thurio. Proteus eagerly agrees, hoping to win Silvia's affections for himself. Lance, meanwhile, has fallen for a milkmaid and recounts to a bemused Speed her various attractions.

ACT 4 Valentine and Speed are heading back to Verona through the forest when they are ambushed by outlaws. Impressed by Valentine's bearing, they ask him to lead them. Back at court, Proteus is troubled by his conscience but continues to woo Silvia, who is shocked at his betrayal of Valentine and Julia. When the disguised Julia arrives she immediately discovers what is going on, but bides her time. Silvia, on the other hand, has decided to act: she plans to escape her impending marriage to Thurio and, with the help of her friend Sir Eglamour, join Valentine in Mantua. In the meantime, Proteus has recruited Julia (renamed Sebastian) to deliver a letter and a ring to Silvia - the very ring that Julia had given him. But Silvia, out of sympathy for Julia, again rejects Proteus's advances. Lance, all this time, has been sorting out the problems caused by his troublesome dog, Crab.

ACT 5 News has reached the Duke about his daughter's flight, and when Proteus, Thurio and Julia hear of it, they each determine to find her. Proteus succeeds first, rescuing Silvia from the outlaws who have captured her. When, however, she continues to reject him, he resolves to take her by force - unaware that Valentine is watching. Valentine intervenes, rescues Silvia and denounces the treachery of his friend. But when Proteus begs forgiveness, Valentine not only immediately consents but also declares that Proteus can have Silvia after all. At this, Julia/Sebastian, who has been present the whole time, faints - whereupon her real identity is uncovered and she is reunited with a penitent Proteus. The Outlaws enter with the captured Duke and Thurio, who initially claims Silvia but gives her up when threatened by Valentine. The Duke then consents to the marriage of Silvia and Valentine, and pardons all the Outlaws.
