Affirmative Action promotes the hiring of competent people. It does not imply that someone should be hired just because they are minorities. It helps to widen the variety of people to be considered for hire in hopes of creating a more diverse candidate pool from which to choose. Groups of people are often stereotyped and discriminated. In the case of gender stereotypes, these are attributes that are imparted to males and females merely by virtue of their gender. The effect of affirmative action on women may make them suffer because of the image of second-class citizenship as a result of privileged treatment, because it might well be considered that they were hired not because of their work skills but because of their gender. Affirmative action can as a result lead to the conclusion that women who are hired under affirmative action are unskilled.
