Some individuals die from diseases caused by chronic alcoholism; others die from car crashes or other accidents resulting from being under the influence of alcohol. For example, young men ages 16-20 who drink and drive while intoxicated are 15,560 times more likely to die in a car accident than young men who do not drink or who drink amounts insufficient to cause intoxication. In 2003 about 18,000 people died of alcohol-related fatalities, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In addition, in non-car crash accidents, alcohol is often a factor, and about a third of all individuals in the United States who die from unintentional accidents not related to car crashes have a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit.
The substance of alcohol itself may cause death, as when individuals (usually young men) engage in binge drinking and imbibe copious quantities of alcohol, leading to alcohol poisoning. The body is unable to metabolize the alcohol fast enough in some cases, and the individual dies.
Alcohol may also contribute to the deaths of those who do not drink, such as those who are killed by drunk drivers or who are abused by alcoholics. College students are often very heavy drinkers, and according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in their report on the culture of campus drinking in their article in 2002 in Alcohol Alert, alcohol consumption is linked to at least 1,400 student deaths each year.
